Cape May County Technical
In memory of a successful graduate and dedicated former employee of the Cape May County Technical School District, the Donna Wise-Kelleher Memorial Cosmetology Scholarship was established in 2008.
Newly accepted Technical School District Cosmetology students in both high school and post secondary programs, whose aspirations are to be a leader in the cosmetology field, and have a demonstrated financial need, are eligible.
In previous years, two awards were allotted, but this year, an additional scholarship award was added, allowing for three awards to deserving students.
The 2010-2011 recipients of the Donna Wise-Kelleher Memorial Cosmetology Scholarship were recognized at a recent meeting of the Cape May County Technical School District.
The scholarship was established in honor of Donna Wise-Kelleher, who was a Cape May County Technical School Cosmetology graduate, an Advisory Council member, a Cosmetology teaching assistant and owner of Salon Allure in North Cape May.
Post Secondary student, Cherie Robey, was awarded $500.00 to be applied towards tuition. High school students Kaitlyn Rice and Amanda Rivera were each awarded $300.00 to be applied towards the expense of the required cosmetology kit supplies.
In attendance at the meeting were two primary sponsors of this scholarship: Joe Gilmartin, broker/owner of Century 21 – Gilmartin, and Shiela Playford, present owner of the Cutting Edge Salon which operates at the location of Donna’s former salon and the founder of the scholarship award, Grayce Kelleher. Donna’s husband, children, extended family, friends and colleagues participated in the award presentation.
Crest Memorial
Crest Memorial School students in grades three through eight who have produced exemplary written work during the months of November and December were recently rewarded with a pizza party and prominent display of their compositions.
Crest Memorial Principal, Ann-Maria Guevara, an educator who strives to improve student-writing skills through encouragement and example, originated the Principal’s Corner.
Not only is the work of the young writers exhibited in the main entrance to the school, but they were also treated to a pizza lunch with Guevara. During the lunch, students discussed their essays with the principal.
Those achieving Principal’s Corner received a certificate commending them for their writing excellence.

The topics and styles for student writing showcased on the Principal’s Corner bulletin board are varied, ranging from analytical essays and book reports to poetry and research papers. The student compositions will remain on the Principal’s Corner bulletin board for the next eight weeks.
Dennis Township
Autumn and early winter was spooky and cheerful, as well as productive and busy in Dennis Township Middle School.
Students in Debbie Tanner’s 8th grade Algebra 1 class created scarecrows. But these weren’t the everyday scarecrows that would guard your tomatoes and corn. These scarecrows were famous mathematicians, chosen by her math students because of their impressive contributions to the field of mathematics. The scarecrows will lurk in the hallways of the middle school for the weeks to come, startling students and teachers alike with their realistic faces and lifelike poses.
Students in Marjorie Kozakowski’s 8th grade Language Arts class at Dennis Township Middle School have recently been studying the literature of Edgar Allan Poe. Students prepared projects from a variety of topics connected to Poe, such as his famous raven and his lost love, Annabelle Lee. Jake Gibson smiles with enthusiasm after finishing his solo performance of “Annabelle Lee”.
The DTMS Student Government welcomed the month of December with a victorious showing at the Dennis Township Christmas Parade. They sang and danced to “Run, Run Rudolph”, which was choreographed and led by Student Government advisors and teachers Marni McCann and Amanda Unkle.
The students were very excited about winning their trophy and were pleased to share the parade spotlight with the Dennis Township Band, led by music teachers Marcia Dunlap and Carlos Morales.
Glenwood Avenue
On December 9 a representative of the Wetlands Institute visited the Pre-k and Kindergarten Classes of Glenwood Ave. Elementary School Annex. It was called the Sea Creature Program in which the students learned about the animals that live in the sea and their habitat. Also, they learned about their life cycle and food chain.
Afterwards they had a chance to touch and explore hands on with the sea animals. This program would not have been possible without the sponsor of the Greater Wildwood Elks Lodge #1896.
