Avalon
The Avalon School District has announced it has information available for citizens interested in running for a vacant seat on the board of education. The Avalon Board of Education will have 2 vacancies in the April 20 Annual School Election, David Rauenzahn, Chief School Administrator announced today. A full term on the school board runs for three years.
Candidates must file a nominating petition with the local school board in order to get their name on the ballot for the Annual School Election. The current deadline to submit the nominating petition is 4 p.m. Monday, March 1, 2010. The election is scheduled for Tuesday, April 20, 2010. A change in the Annual School Election date and candidacy deadline has been proposed in the Legislature. The New Jersey School Boards Association will notify local school districts of such a change, if enacted.
Prospective school board candidates can obtain a “School Board Candidate Kit” online at www.njsba.org., or at the Avalon Elementary School, 32nd Street and Ocean Drive, Avalon, NJ. Published by the New Jersey School Boards Association, the School Board Candidate Kit includes a nominating petition, information about legal qualifications for school board candidacy and the role of the school board member. Cape May County Technical
Amber Johnson, a student at Cape May County Technical School, received an award from N.J. Association of Counties and $1,000 from Wal-Mart Green Internship program by Freeholder Director Daniel Beyel, Vice Director Ralph Sheets Jr. Gerald Thornton, at the Jan. 26 freeholder meeting.
Glenwood Avenue
The fourth and fifth grade student council members from Glenwood Avenue Elementary School, along with their advisor, Michael Menszak, have been helping the United Way for the past four years. Every Wednesday, weather permitting, the fourth or fifth grade student council members walk to the United Way headquarters in Wildwood to help make preparations for Thursday’s Soup Kitchen. They pack donated food into bags and display clothing that has been donated.
On Thursdays, community members who are in need, go to the United Way’s Soup Kitchen to eat a meal, get a much-needed bag of food to take home, and select some clothing. Suzanne Nardi, Executive Director of Cape May County’s United Way, and other staff members assist the students in the spirit of giving.
Margaret Mace
Mrs. Clarke’s and Mrs. Golden’s Kindergarten classes went on a field trip to their local supermarket, Superfresh! Ms. Karen and other Superfresh staff members gave the children a very detailed and informational tour of the supermarket.
The children were able to view each department and learn very interesting facts.
They were even able to touch a lobster in the Seafood Department and decorate (and eat) a cupcake in the Bakery Department! MMS kindergarten would like to thank Superfresh for their wonderful visit!
Middle Township
Elementary #1 students were invited to share their interests, talents, collections, and hobbies at the Annual Interest Fair. Parents, teachers, and students gathered in the All Purpose Room last Tuesday evening.
The audience was treated to a guitar performance, a gymnastics number, and a dance routine. Some of the collections displayed included crabs, Star Wars figures, and American Girl Dolls. A winner from each grade level was awarded a gift card to Michaels. The interest Fair was another successful and popular event hosted by the ever-busy Middle Township PTA.
Our Lady Star of the Sea
“When we started this event, I knew it sounded like a good idea, but I never dreamed it would become as popular as it has,” said Donna Burkhardt, event chairperson. “For the past three years, vendor tables have been sold out months before the event. Women start calling the school for tickets as soon as the holidays are over.”
All for the Girls Night is sponsored by Our Lady Star of the Sea Regional School and takes place in the hall at Ocean and Lafayette Streets. The event runs from 7 to 10 pm on Thursday, February 11th. The ticket price of $10 entitles each guest to hors d’oeuvres, a glass of wine, and a complimentary sweet treat courtesy of our friends at the Fudge Kitchen. Ladies can shop, dine and sip a glass of wine while enjoying music played by DJ Tony.
Burkhardt is pleased with the direction this event has grown, “All For the Girls Night began as a fundraising event for Our Lady Star of the Sea School, but what is really wonderful is how this evening has become a social event that women in the community look forward to. They love the opportunity to get together and socialize, shop, enjoy food and wine, and bond. In addition, we give our support to local artists and entrepreneurs by showcasing their work.”

St. Ann Regional
We are proud to announce the formation of a partnership with the Surgery Club of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM).
PCOM Department of Surgery Chairman Dr. Art Sesso shares, “The club dedicates its activities to the memories of two past Chairmen of the Department of Surgery: Dr. Galen Young, Sr. and Dr. Daniel Wisely.
Both men committed themselves to excellence in education and community service. As we begin this educational journey with the young students of Cape Trinity Catholic, we look forward to carrying out the mantra of Drs. Young and Wisely.”
Dr. Sesso adds, “Our students are excited about coming to Wildwood. We plan to participate in a number of activities that will promise to be both fun and educational.
We look forward to serving the students of Cape Trinity Catholic through teaching, mentoring, and good fellowship.”
As Sr. Sheila Murphy and Donna DiPasquale thought about this partnership they knew the partner needed to possess some key characteristics. The partnership needed to offer an innovative learning experience. The partnership needed to offer a program that fit into the critical thinking focus.
Finally, the partner needed to share the same belief in service. Sr. Sheila and Mrs. DiPasquale chose the partnership with PCOM because it accomplishes all of these things.
Plans are being set to send eight current students from both Our Lady Star of the Sea and St. Ann Regional Schools to PCOM for the day. The students selected for the trip will meet with Surgery Club members and discuss ways that they can connect beginning with the next school year. The elementary students will also tour the campus and visit the human patient simulator lab. More official, scheduled activities will begin in September.
All registrations will be accepted beginning February 16, 2010. Contact Advancement Directors Julie Roche at 522-2704 or Maria Mulville at 884-4437 for more information.
