Scholarship News
The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Peterson-Little Post 386 located on Congress Street in Cape May is proud to announce that for 2015 the Post will award college scholarships totaling $7,500 to high school seniors living in the communities of Cape May, Cape May Point, and Lower Township. The funds for these scholarships are derived primarily from the VFW’s clambake.
The amount awarded this year is less than we have awarded in recent years because of unexpected repairs to the Post’s building.
This year’s winners are Farah Almandani, Ryan Frame, Ariel Magee, Joshua Schneider, Bradley Fournier, and Carissa Rose Scott.
Bishop McHugh
The eighth grade students at Bishop McHugh recently raised $2,280 for The Pulsera Project, a nonprofit organization that supports fair trade artists in Nicaragua. The students raised enough money to support three full months of fair trade employment for the artist cooperative, and to send one artist to college classes for four years.
Through their Spanish class, the students sold colorful handwoven bracelets, or “pulseras” in Spanish. Each bracelet was tagged with a photo and name of the artist who made it. Bracelets were $5 each and purses were $10. The students managed their own marketing, sales and finance committees, with some friendly competition to see who could sell more.
The Pulsera Project brightens U.S. schools with art, film, and compelling cultural education while engaging students in international service that is effective, enriching, and fun.
The money raised will support artist cooperatives with home and education loans, fair trade employment and a children’s shelter in Nicaragua.
Since 2009, the Pulsera Project has grown from a single Pennsylvania classroom to over 1,000 schools across 49 states, coloring hallways and classrooms with beautiful Nicaraguan art and awareness of social justice issues. For more information, visit pulseraproject.org.
Cape Christian Academy
After seven week’s of fundraising with “Feed the Need”, a Christian mission focused program, Cape Christian Academy culminated this unique and worthwhile event with a Packing Party Celebration, June 10 at the school.
Students, their families, faculty, as well as community volunteers packaged over 10,000 meals for needy children in Haiti. With worship music playing and the school Cougar mascot encouraging everyone, each grade took turns working together in an assembly line fashion to label, fill, seal and package meals for shipment.
It was an exciting morning filled with purpose and meaning! Funds raised from this event will be applied towards the completion of the school’s Student Life Center and the balance towards the food packages for those who need it most. A double blessing! Because of the efforts of many and generous members and businesses in the community over $20,000 was raised.
