Cape Christian Academy
On December 12, Cape Christian Academy held their annual Christmas Concert, titled, “Joyful & Triumphant”, at Tabernacle United Methodist Church in Erma. The students entertained their guests with a variety of traditional and contemporary holiday worship music, through a blend of vocals, instrument and dance.
Cape May City Elementary
Mrs. Stephanie Neuman, of Cape May City Elementary School, has been tailoring her lessons around a gingerbread theme. The students are writing gingerbread stories, doing gingerbread math, reading all types of gingerbread literature, and finally making gingerbread houses.
In other Cape May City Elementary news, Mr. Joe Picard and Mr. Bob Smith from City Hal delivered pizzas to Mrs. MacNaughton’s and Mrs. Lucas’s second grade classes on December 12. The classes designed posters on how to keep our waters clean. Mr. Bob Smith said these were the best posters he had ever seen and they were displayed at the Cape May Convention Center during the FEMA Convention.
Lower Cape May Regional
Lower Cape May Regional High School has been awarded a $2,500 grant through the H&R Block Budget Challenge — a teen financial literacy program that rewards high school classes for mastering real-world budgeting and personal finance decision-making. Lower Cape May Regional High School is one of 15 winners nationwide.
The learn-by-doing educational approach of the H&R Block Budget Challenge allows students to experience activities like paying bills, managing expenses, saving money, investing in retirement, paying taxes and more in the safety of a classroom. The program was created to help address the need for more financial education in the classroom.
Only 7 percent of high school students1 are financially literate and fewer than 30 percent of adults report being offered financial education at school or college. The state of New Jerseycurrently requires a one-semester course in financial education to graduate.
“We’re honored to be among the top-performing schools in the country for the H&R Block Budget Challenge,” said Lee Pierce, business/technology teacher at Lower Cape May Region High School. “Financial literacy is important to the future success of our students and we’re thrilled there’s such a hands-on platform through which they can learn.”
The H&R Block Budget Challenge is free to high school teachers and home school educators. Participants play classroom against classroom and student against student, competing for $3 million in grants, scholarships and cash prizes in the 2014/2015 school year. Three simulations will launch this spring and teacher registration is open at HRBDS.org.

Soroptimists International is a global organization that has a chapter in Cape May County with a membership of 64. Their focus is to empower women and young girls, granting awards and fundraising to support those in need in Cape May County. Co-Chairs of the event were Stace Pashuck and Mary Rose Bispels.
On November 15, the GIRLZ RULE conference was held in Lower Cape May Regional High School. This is a free conference subsidized by the Soroptimists International of Cape May County for Cape May County girls in grades 5 and 6. Three workshops were offered to give young girls the tools they need to succeed such as Healthy Diet Habits presented by Annemarie Chelius of ACC Culinary Arts, Exercise through Zumba presented by Mirsha Serra and Kim Gunst of NCM Fitness Center and Cyber Safety and bullying presented by Sgt. Denise Holt of Wildwood Crest Police Dept. Free breakfast and lunch was served.
The keynote speaker at lunch was Kelsey Wise, and former Soroptimist award winner who spoke about the importance of a positive outlook.
An important component of the conference is the presence of the of Lower Cape May Regional High School juniors and seniors who were chosen to participate for their leadership skills. The high school ladies, under the supervision of their advisor, Mary Rose Bispels, were assigned to and acted as mentors for the younger girls.
