With a bit of help from the U.S. Post Office some Middle Township students celebrated Lincoln’s Birthday with a look at the present and the past. Cape May Point Postmaster Melissa Lomax visited Maureen Gibboni’s second grade classroom at Middle Township School to share with them some facts about the lives of Presidents Abraham Lincoln and current President Barrack Obama.
Lomax’s February visit to the school coincided with Lincoln’s Birthday week, Valentines Day, Black History Month, and the U.S. Post Office’s release of new 42 cent stamps to commemorate Lincoln’s birth on Feb. 10. Students learned about the diverse patchwork that is an important part of American history and culture and how Lincoln, who lived almost two century’s ago, is an inspirational figure for Obama, the country’s first African American president.
Students wrote Valentine letters to the First Family and posted their letters with the Abraham Lincoln stamps before receiving a Valentine of their own—a Postal Service goody bag, that included a Valentine sweet.
The 2009 Lincoln stamps, which depict the former president as a rail-splitter, a lawyer, a politician, and a president, are now on sale at local post offices, or they can be purchased by phone at 1-800-STAMP-24 or online at www.usps.com.
