New Year, New Faces, New Software

By Leslie Truluck

STONE HARBOR –– As aromas of Labor Day barbeques dissipate, they are replaced by the familiar smell of new textbooks, crayons and pencils. Relaxed beach days become sparse as fall schedules dawn and the big yellow school buses circulate through borough streets today.
For the 86 students enrolled at Stone Harbor Elementary School, it is their first day back to school. However, teachers have long been preparing for the young faces seated before them.
Educators attended a workshop Aug. 28 to learn the school’s new On Course software, which works as an electronic grade book to help organize lesson plans, report cards, attendance and progress reports online.
“It’s geared for teachers to use easily while they’re here at school or from home,” Superintendent David Rauenzahn said. This is the first year the school is using the new software and so far instructors give it raving reviews.
“I can’t believe how much easier it will make my life,” said Julie Foster, a veteran teacher of 19 years.
“It’s a powerful program combining many features,” said Paul Dal Santo, who teaches Math and Computer Science to incorporate online textbook features into students’ lessons.
The Board of Education hired three new staff members for this school year: Tracy Malloy as administrative secretary from Hatboro-Horsham, Pa. School District, the friendly new voice that is heard when anyone calls the school; Scott Terry, teaching science and algebra, a graduate of Monmouth University with teaching experience in Ocean Township and Wildwood school districts; and Katie Rinylo, teaching vocal music, a graduate of Immaculata University with teaching experience in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
It all makes no difference to Anthony Cozzan, 5, of Avalon, entering kindergarten. He was more excited to ride the bus than the planning involved for his color-coded lessons.
