Matthies Named Tech’s Super

CREST HAVEN — The Board of Education of the Cape May County Technical School District has selected Robert W. Matthies Jr. as the next superintendent of the district, effective Jan. 1, 2008. He will succeed William E. Desmond who is retiring after five and half years as district superintendent.
Matthies has been the principal of the high school since 1997.
He joined the faculty in 1994 as the assistant principal when the school began a full-time, comprehensive high school.
He started his teaching career in 1972 at Brick Township High School and was headmaster at Admiral Farragut Academy from 1979 to 1993.
Matthies is a graduate of Monmouth College with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in educational supervisions and administration. A resident of Seaside Park, he has served on borough council, the planning board and the board of education and recently completed a term as mayor.
“This is a school where the sense of community has grown through the guidance of our board of education, the strong efforts of our faculty and staff, and the support of parents whose children who are taught to achieve,” Matthies stated in a release.
“Since 1994, this school has been my community and I am honored to serve it in this new capacity.”
“Mr. Matthies’ experience in education, coupled with his years of service in the district make him an excellent choice for this position,” Desmond said. “There were a number of highly qualified individuals whom the board interviewed and it was a difficult decision. The board and I have confidence that Mr. Matthies will do an excellent job bringing the district forward.”
