ERMA – Local youth Andrew Heim represented Lower Cape May Regional High School at New Jersey Governor’s School of Engineering & Technology (GSET) at Rutgers University.
Andrew is an upcoming high school senior and has been interested in engineering for years. He was selected by his school to apply for the GSET program due to his stellar grades and aptitude for learning.
Admission to the program is very competitive, whereas 300-400 students apply and less than 25 percent are accepted. This year only 70 students were selected to participate with a male-to-female ratio of 50 percent.
The curriculum provided four academic courses as well as participation in a small research and design project. The two core courses presented were Robotics and Quantum Physics.
Heim was able to select two additional courses of interest to him including Properties of Radio Controlled Flight and Earthquake Resistant Structures. The students were kept busy while working 14 hour days, seven days a week.
The program also included the opportunity to visit local engineering immersed corporations to learn about future career prospects. Heim was able to participate in field trips to Boeing, Silverline Windows, and Lockheed Martin where the students had the opportunity to see how engineers contribute on a daily basis and what career opportunities were available.
The program culminated July 27 when students presented the results of their research projects. Heim and four other students presented their research topic, ”A Method for In-flight Adjustment of Wing Dihedral with Folding Wings and Tail”.
