WILDWOOD – Five Mile Beach Bus Company (FMB) has announced that starting Monday, April 6, students attending Wildwood public and parochial schools will not be charged a fare on its buses in the Wildwoods.
FMB provides bus transportation on its regular route in the Wildwoods year-round for a one-way fare of $2.50.
“Because the Wildwoods have the unfortunate distinction of being too small geographically to require the school districts to provide transportation, for as long as I can remember FMB has provided this service,” explained Dick Adelizzi, FMB owner.
“My own kids used the bus in the ’80’s while attending Crest Memorial and Wildwood High School. Now we have discovered that some parents are having a hard time paying the bus fares for their children, so something needed to be done,” said Adelizzi.
Starting April 6, through the end of school in June, and picking up again in September, students going to and from Crest Memorial, Glenwood Avenue School, Margaret Mace, St Anne’s, Wildwood Catholic and Wildwood High School can ride the bus for free on school days.
“The free fares for island students will be funded by the charter bus work for school teams provided by FMB and by the summer trolley service on Five Mile Island that FMB runs each year” Adelizzi noted.
The company has been providing continuous trolley and bus service to the Wildwoods since 1902 and is the oldest private transportation company in the U.S. Five Mile’s affiliated company, Great American Trolley Company, is a major provider of transportation in Atlantic City and runs summer trolley routes in Ocean City, Sea Isle City, Avalon, Stone Harbor and Cape May City. All FMB and Great American Trolley Company vehicles are regularly inspected by the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
