CAPE MAY – Cat in the Hat visited the elementary school;
The pupils from K to third thought, “That’s really cool.”
They first heard a tale of “Thing One” and “Thing Two.”
Then each class had its turn
To give Cat gentle high-fives,
As each boy and girl reached for his paw,
They looked up at Cat,
What was it they saw?
A big smile on Cat’s face, and a silly tall hat,
But that’s not the reason the Cat just sat;
The Cat brought a lesson for each child to heed,
How important to read, that’s just what they need,
For the more they read, each book is a seed,
To help their minds grow the more, they’ll know.
When Cat waved goodbye, and the fun was all done,
Back to their classes the children all went.
The book Cat left on that special day,
“If I Ran the Zoo” was from NJEA.
With apologies to Dr. Seuss and his world-famed creation who visited Cape May City Elementary School Feb. 9. Cat sat tall on stage in the Helen Porter Auditorium.
Before Cat appeared, John Thomas, school board administrator, and board secretary, read “The Cat in the Hat” to the pupils.
According to Superintendent Victoria Zelenak, the school had waited several years for the visit of Cat in the Hat. The special visit, coordinated through the New Jersey Education Association, (NJEA), was an early reminder to the student body, and especially to those in kindergarten through third grade, that March is “Read Across America” month.
The book that Cat left was “If I Ran the Zoo” by Dr. Seuss. Kim White, technology teacher and “Read Across America” coordinator, held up the book for the children to see. It will remain in the school for them to read.
During that month, extra time will be spent reading at school and at home.
