DeFranco Resigns from Middle, Heads to Margate as Super

By Al Campbell

COURT HOUSE — “With extreme regret,” Middle Township Board of Education on Thursday, Jan. 15, unanimously accepted the resignation of Dr. Theresa DeFranco.
DeFranco is the district’s assistant superintendent of curriculum, instruction and district wide initiatives.
She has accepted the position of superintendent of the Margate School District in Atlantic County.
DeFranco will remain in Middle Township until March 16. From then until the end of the present school year, she will work along with Margate’s outgoing Superintendent Dr. Dominick Potena to allow “Margate to do a seamless transition.”
Potena will depart from that district July 1, DeFranco said.
As superintendent in Margate, DeFranco will oversee a Type 1 district that encompasses pre-kindergarten to eighth grades. As of Oct. 15, 2007, the district had 559 pupils.
“It’s been wonderful working here,” said DeFranco following the board’s open session after a brief executive session during which her resignation was discussed.
One of DeFranco’s milestones at Middle was the implementation of a new literacy program that was implemented by closely working with a nationally-recognized literacy expert.
Using elementary teachers as literacy coaches for their peers, new techniques were demonstrated that made reading interesting to students.
DeFranco was also instrumental in getting the first Cheeseburger in Paradise fund raiser organized. The Sept. 20 event raised funds for school clubs and a scholarship fund.
DeFranco is married to Dr. Peter Mora, president of Atlantic Cape Community College.
