CREST HAVEN – Recently, Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 83, representing the Wildwoods, partnered with Cape Tech’s Maritime History & Leadership students to help them earn their New Jersey Boating Safety Certificate.
Flotilla 83 provided instructors and donated all instructional and testing materials. Students completed the course covering topics including navigation rules, use of very high frequency (VHF) marine radio, and how to file a float plan.
According to a release, Junior Cole DiCola, of Court House, believes he is Cape Tech’s first student to hold valid licenses to boat, fly and drive.
The students who passed the Boating Safety exam included: Michael Brown, Michael Bryan, Cameron Day, Cole DiCola, Marek Haluska, Jared Hand, Spencer Hughes, Dominick Jones, Frederick Raring, Jalen Saunders, Thomas Shute, Julia Sittineri, Carter Tyndall, and Leonardo Zaccaria. Gabrielle Zenyuk and Lorin Perednas completed the course and are scheduled to take the test in June with the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
The Maritime History & Leadership elective course is an introduction to the Coast Guard and military service in general. The course includes an overview of Coast Guard history, missions, organization, shipboard and shore station operations, and traditions from its inception to the present. The historical missions segment reinforces studies in American History from 1790 through modern times with emphasis on the role of the Coast Guard in armed conflicts involving the United States.
The course also covers leadership styles and utilizes case studies in military leadership.
