CREST HAVEN – The Cape May County Technical School District Board of Education met Jan. 27. The Board covered a variety of topics, including revenues and expenses, bids and contracts, personnel hirings, and administrative reports. Principal Michael Adams reported on the Holiday Pep Rally. Adams affirmed that the rally was a success and “an old fashion fun time.”
“Our annual pep rallies are opportunities to introduce and support the athletic teams,” Adams explained. “During the rally, the classes compete in a variety of games and cheering contests, as well as decorating their bleacher sections to show class and school spirit,” Adams said. ”The class who wins the competition earns the ‘spirit stick,’ a large wooden paddle-shaped board embossed with a hawk and plates designating the yearly winner,” stated Adams. “If the senior class wins the stick they get to march it down the isle at graduation. It is a meaningful moment recognized by current students and alumni. And it is great fun. This year’s senior class is a back to back winner, only the second time in the 20 year history of the stick.”
Adams also confirmed the continued success of such programs as Skills USA. ”Skills USA is a national student organization that promotes career/technical education through student competitions and workshops,” Adams explained. “The national organization is supported by state organizations and local chapters at schools. The students prepare for competitions in their chosen field, such as culinary arts, masonry and many other CTE areas. There are leadership opportunities, extemporaneous speech competitions, and a highly competitive quiz bowl. The competitions are a unique opportunity for our kids to interact with the students from other schools. Budget cuts have impacted our ability to compete beyond the state level, but we are hoping to find ways to raise the money to let our state gold medal winners compete in the Nationals during the summer months. Our kids are generally very successful in the competitions and we have two National gold medal winners in our history,” Adams concluded.
Additional administrative reports included Superintendent Dr. Nancy M. Hudanich’s presentation of the Governor’s Proclamation to the board members. “The Governor’s Proclamation cites school members’ meaningful contributions to public education and the quality of life in New Jersey.” Superintendent Hudanich recognized Board of Education President Robert L. Boyd, Vice President Alan I. Gould, Members Kerry Higgs, Anthony L. Anzelone, and Executive County Superintendent Dr. Richard Stepura. Dr. Hudanich presented the Board members with the Governors Proclamation, and a certificate of appreciation for “Their dedicated service to the students of the Cape May Technical School District.”
