Cape May Elementary School Welcomes New Students

By On Deck Staff

Everybody is usually nervous on the first day of school, don’t you think? New clothes, new books, new teachers, new classmates, new schedules and new rules make everyone just a little bit jittery.
The Cape May City Elementary School holds an annual event to take the edge off the new school year and to help kids and parents feel more comfortable about their new school.
On Wed., Sept. 2, 2009, (the week before school starts), the Cape May City Elementary School will host a Welcome New Students Open House from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The program starts in the auditorium with a welcome and overview of the school year by School Superintendent Victoria Zelenak.
“Our Open House for new students gives them a trial run before the official first day of school,” said Zelenak. “Just having the chance to walk through the door before school starts is a great help for kids and parents. Also, they get to see that their principal is a pretty nice lady,” added Zelenak playfully.
After the overview, students and parents will be able to tour the building and classrooms. “Returning students will serve as tour guides,” said Zelenak. “We thought it would be good for the new kids to meet kids who have already attended our school. They might give the new kids some inside tips.”
All the teachers may not be present since school doesn’t start until Tues., Sept. 8th. However, the classrooms, special area rooms, gym, pool, library, computer lab, nurse’s office, and locker rooms will all be open for the tours.
This year’s program will include a presentation by Mr. William Sardone, NJ Director of Operation Military Kids which is an organization that supports the children and youth impacted by deployment. The NJ initiative was officially launched in April 2005. Since its inception OMK has touched 88,000 military youth and provided information to 21,009 community members across the United States. Go to www.operationmilitarykids.org for a full description of OMK.
In the Spring of 2009, Cape May City Elementary School and Operation Military Kids formed the OMK at Cape May to meet the needs of the military children in the school.
“We will have some school supplies to distribute to all the new students to attend the Open House, not just the military kids,” announced Sardone. “The Cape May County 4-H and a parent group will be involved in this effort,” Sardone added.
The Open House is open to all family members of newly registered students and to families who may be considering sending their children to Cape May City Elementary School in the future.
