MAYS LANDING – Atlantic Cape Community College awarded 964 associate in arts, associate in science and associate in applied science degrees at the school’s 48th commencement, May 21. Of the total, 186 were awarded to Cape May County residents.
Freeholder and business owner Will Morey delivered the keynote address.
Dr. Peter L. Mora, Atlantic Cape president, presented an honorary associate in arts degree to Morey, president and CEO of The Morey Organization and co-chair of the Atlantic Cape Foundation’s major gifts campaign, Create Opportunity.
Stephen R. Dunn received the President’s Distinguished Alumni Award, which recognizes an Atlantic Cape graduate who has distinguished him or herself through professional, personal, public or community-based accomplishments. Dunn, of Atlantic City, was a member of the first Atlantic Cape class and had a distinguished career as scientific researcher at Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Medical College.
Dennis Stacy of Northfield, treasurer of the Atlantic Cape Foundation Board of Trustees, received the President’s Distinguished Foundation Board Member Award, which recognizes a current or past member of the board who has demonstrated leadership, advocacy and support on behalf of the college and its students. He led the effort to develop the board’s investment policies and he oversees the financial health of the organization as the chair of the Foundation’s Finance Committee.
High Honors Student
High honors student Chad A. Murnaghan of Court House, who achieved a perfect 4.0 average, delivered the class farewell. Murnaghan earned an associate degree in accounting, returning to college after a 20-year career as a plumber.
He shared with graduates how Atlantic Cape helped give his life new direction after being laid off. “Atlantic Cape Community College’s motto states ‘Opportunity Starts Here,’ and this was true for me as this is my opportunity for a whole new path in life, as it is for each and every one of the graduates here today,” Murnaghan said. “I always dreamed of a college degree, and I couldn’t be more proud of myself, and my fellow classmates, as we go forth into the next chapter of our lives, now possessing the education needed to succeed in today’s world.”
Student Government Association President Mohamed B. Shawi of Egg Harbor Township, who will transfer to University of Central Florida, told the graduates: “Throughout my time here, like many of you, I faced difficulties, both educational and personal, but with every obstacle I faced I was fortunate enough to have a professor or an adviser that was there to help me overcome it.”
Israel Negron II of Hammonton was elected by the student body to serve as alumni representative to the college’s board of trustees, and was recognized.
Maria Ivette Torres, Board of Trustees chair, conferred and presented degrees to the graduates.
