MAYS LANDING — Atlantic Cape Community College will join the worldwide Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day celebration on Nov. 18, at all three campuses.
GIS is a technology widely used to evaluate, solve problems and make better decisions that is used everyday. GIS is used in finding the best location to establish a business, for emergency management, crime prevention, environmental management and others.
GIS is a computer-based mapping tool that takes information from a database about locations such as streets, buildings, water features and terrain and turns it into visual layers. Power supplies directed to homes, patrol cars and fire trucks to keep neighborhoods safe, and delivery trucks are more efficient because of GIS. People in almost every profession, from farmers to Homeland Security, reap the benefits of this technology.
The locations and times for ACCC’s GIS Day events are:
• Cape May County Campus, 341 Court House-South Dennis Road, Cape May Court House, 9-11:15 a.m., Interactive Broadcast of Mays Landing presentations. GIS Professionals Exhibits in the cafeteria, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
• Mays Landing Campus, 5100 Black Horse Pike, Mays Landing, 9 a.m., Kick-off by ACCC President Dr. Peter Mora in the Walter E. Edge Theater, followed by presentations in 30-minute intervals by GIS professionals until 11:15 a.m. GIS Professionals’ Exhibits in J-building lobby, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
• Worthington Atlantic City Campus, 1535 Bacharach Blvd., Atlantic City, 9-11:15 a.m., Interactive Broadcast of Mays Landing presentations. GIS Professionals Exhibits in the cafeteria, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Held each year for the past decade on the Wednesday of National Geographic Society’s Geography Awareness Week (Nov. 16-20 in 2009), GIS Day is a global grassroots celebration of the innovative technology that uses geography to bring countless benefits to the world.
