A Day at the Movies for Glenwood Avenue Kids

By Herald Staff

Students in Glenwood Avenue School’s Homework Club celebrated the end of a long week of standardized testing with an afternoon at Franks Theaters in Rio Grande, courtesy of the Cape May County Bar Association and the United Way of Cape May County. About 60 students and their teachers enjoyed popcorn and soda while watching Disney’s “Earth” on Thursday, May 14.
“Many people don’t realize that there are kids right here in our community who don’t get a chance to enjoy the things we take the granted,” United Way Executive Director, Suzanne Nardi said. “Some rarely or never get a chance to go to the Boardwalk or the zoo or the movies.”
Members of the County Bar Association donate money every year to adopt several local families during the holidays. This year, they extended that program to include a fun day out for some Glenwood students.
“We still adopted several families this year,” Bar Association Past President and County Counsel John Porto said, “But this seemed like a great way to reach out to even more families the community…by giving their children a day at the movies.”
Porto told the students that the Bar Association, as well as members of the Cape May County community at large are committed to making life better for them.
“We want you to have a fun afternoon,” he said.
