SEAVILLE – Many pass the Seaville Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends but few know the roots Friends have in Cape May County.
Quaker Friends met in the area as early as 1702, and still proudly celebrate the traditions today. The religious structure is believed to be dated back to 1762 and is deemed as one of the county’s historical structures.
The structure on Route 9 in Seaville remains nearly the same with its simplistic charm, including hand-hewn benches and hand-wrought beams. It is like taking a step back in time to simpler days of the past.
Every Christmas Eve, the group gathers to celebrate Christmas with a candlelight service that is unique.
The service is similar to those of centuries ago. Candles glow in the historic building which moves many to feel it is similar to Christmases of yesteryear.
For those who are unfamiliar with Quakerism, the Friends meet and express their faith in the importance of simplicity, equality, and reverence.
There are no collections nor a clergy or planned program. The group gathers at the appointed time and sits in silence. Anyone who feels moved to share a message does so.
They sing hymns and enjoy each other’s company in a non-scripted, non-formatted way.
This year’s Candlelight Christmas Eve Worship takes place 7 p.m. Dec. 24. All are invited to attend.
The simplistic service has endeared itself to many who regard it as a demonstration of how Christmas was celebrated centuries ago.
