Church-Sponsored Rio Thrift Shop Opens

By Herald Staff

RIO GRANDE — St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Stone Harbor, with the help of several parishioners and friends, opened a new thrift shop at 201 Hirst Ave. (behind US Gas, off Route 47) on Monday.
This ’N That is located in a former bank building, across from the Village Shoppes of Rio Grande, and is convenient to public transportation and other shopping. There is ample parking.
This ’N That is currently well-stocked with summer clothes for adults and children, as well as children’s toys, and books, videos, miscellaneous home décor, and some larger household items.
Children’s clothing is priced around $1 per item. Women’s and Teen’s clothing is priced around $2 to$3 per item, and children’s toys can be found for 50 cents per toy.
St. Mary’s extended thanks to Our Savior Lutheran Church in Stone Harbor, which also donated goods. Donations of winter clothes have been set aside and will be for sale closer to the appropriate season.
Profits from the shop will support local causes for those who need it most in Cape May County.
The individuals involved in the Thrift Shop’s development are also volunteers in the United Way Food Program in North Wildwood, and their experiences brought to light the need for additional funding and affordable household resources for those in need in Cape May County.
Gail and Tim Noble of Stone Harbor, along with Betty and Frank Couch, Cape May Court House, who are the visionaries and organizers of the project, said, “There is an urgent need for affordable housing in Cape May County. With the number of buildings being torn down and turned into high-priced condominiums, many people are ending up in motels, without adequate cooking facilities.
“Our hope is to raise money through the Thrift Shop to give Cape May County agencies and other local organizations some help solving these housing problems.”
Gail Noble and Betty Couch have extensive experience working in thrift shops. They added, “Our goal is not only to raise money, but also to provide the community with good quality merchandise at reasonable prices.”
During July and August, This ’N That will be open Mon, Wed, Fri, 10-4, Tue, Thurs, Sat, 10-1. Phone Number: 609-886-7272
How can readers help? Most importantly by donating good quality used clothing and “like-new” household items.
Volunteers are also needed. Call the Thrift Shop at: 609-886-7272.
Where/when to leave donations? The shop will take donations at the door during business hours. Donors can receive documentation for tax purposes if they present an itemized list and appropriate information, when the store is open.
