“Homemade Prom” a big hit

By On Deck Staff

What started as a whim became a night to remember for Adele Marks and 40 of her friends.
Marks is too old for a high school prom this year so she and a group of friends decided to hold their own ‘prom.’
They rented the Parish Hall of the Church of the Advent in Cape May, invited people and purchased decorations. It was an invitation only event created for those who are too old or too young for prom, who can’t afford to go to high school proms or for the chaperones who never went to their proms.
The theme was Masquerade and the prom has been in the works since November. The whole event was done for about $500. They elected a king and a queen, a prince and a princess, and a jester and damsel as Mr. and Ms. Congeniality along with best dressed.
Many of the guests wore custom dresses bought at thrift stores. Fundraisers included a dance class where they learned the basics of several kinds of dancing.
It proved to be a night to remember.
