Pirates invade Historic Cold Spring Village

By On Deck Staff

Celebrate the maritime culture and history of the Jersey Cape at Historic Cold Spring Village Aug. 29-30, as Seafarers’ Weekend runs from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., featuring pirates, music, and a variety of demonstrations and performances of all things nautical.
The Village buildings will also be open, featuring historical interpreters in period clothing who demonstrate the trades, crafts and lifestyles of Early America.
“There is such a rich heritage related to the sea and land around and in Cape May County,” said HCSV Executive Director Anne Salvatore. “We are proud to be able to promote and celebrate that history at the Village.”
Seafarers’ Weekend is rated the #1 driving-distance August event from the Philadelphia Inquirer, and is generously sponsored by Utsch’s Marina and The Lobster House.
Guests will have the opportunity to interact with two groups of pirate re-enactors.
Sea Rats Atlantic, a premiere history re-enactor group, will be demonstrating a typical day in the life of a pirate encampment.
Presentations will include musket firing, battle demonstrations, and a presentation of Henry Hudson’s weaponry and costumes to commemorate Cape May’s 400th Anniversary Celebration.
Valhalla’s Pirates will also join the event, bringing fight scenes and sea song performances both days at noon and 3 p.m.
A kids’ pirate costume contest will be held at 2 p.m., and guests of all ages are encouraged to come dressed in pirate gear.
Other highlights include Scottish pipes and sea shanties from Nae Breek Pipes & Drums Band on Saturday, and glassworking demonstrations from Carlisle School of Glass Art on Sunday.
Skilled local and award winning duck decoy carvers will demonstrate their trade both afternoons along with displays of antique boats.
The President of the NJ Blacksmith Association will team up with the Village’s resident blacksmith to forge nautical ironware and the Friends of HCSV will be holding a traditional South Jersey corn roast at the Village Pavilion.
Historic Cold Spring Village is located on Route 9, three miles north of Victorian Cape May and four miles south of Rio Grande.
