Joan Lorraine Nash 84, October 22, 1934 – September 30, 2019The Cape May Court House community mourns the loss of Joan Lorraine Nash on September 30, 2019. Our Lord gently carried Joan home from a peaceful repose at Cape Regional Medical Center surrounded by friends and her beloved husband, Kenneth Nash. She will be affectionately remembered as a loving wife, doting mother to her boys, caring sister and daughter. Joan will be memorialized in the hearts of everyone she touched with her selfless, humble determination and generosity, her infectious smile, unforgettable laugh, appreciation for a good prank, and her inseparable bond with her faith in Christ.Born October 22, 1934 to Anthony (deceased) and Ruth Alberts, Joan grew up in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Joan’s Catholic faith was seeded both at home and while attending Saint Matthew’s Catholic School. She graduated from East Stroudsburg High School in 1952 as a member of the National Honor Society and school chorus. She married George Gilliland (deceased) in 1955 and began raising her family in East Stroudsburg, PA. The family grew as their travels carried her to Norfolk, VA and Fort Worth, TX before returning to Stroudsburg in 1961. Joan was a gifted pianist, talented vocalist known to break into spontaneous song, and from an early age, possessed a passion for writing. That talent later earned her editor positions at local newspapers in East Stroudsburg. Joan married Ken Nash, the love of her life in 1984 and moved to Cape May Court House where she worked at the Cape May County Herald until she retired.Joan was an unfaltering source of love, affection, and outreach among her family, friends, and faith communities. She volunteered wherever she saw a need that was not being fulfilled. Joan gave every cause her tireless support committing her time to activities such as Volunteers in Medicine. As a devout parishioner at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church, Joan poured herself into many parish activities that included fund raising and financial administration. She was a fountain of support and service, some considering her the gravitational center of their social solar system, instrumental in delivering sharing support, assistance, rides, and entertainment to all her cherished friends well into her final days with us.Joan is mourned, and will be greatly missed by her husband Kenneth Nash in Cape May Court House, and surviving family, including her six sons, always affectionately referred to as “my boys”, George Gilliland (Jane) of NYC; Mark Gilliland (Rosemarie) of Coronado, CA; Anthony Gilliland (Robin) of Murrieta, CA; Jonathon Gilliland (Zai) of Oklahoma City, OK; David Gilliland (Xiao Pei) of Stroudsburg, PA; and Francis Gilliland (Cynthia Li) of Wharton, NJ; her 101-year-old mother, Ruth Alberts, of Stroudsburg, PA, her sisters Patricia Hibschman (William) of Stroudsburg, and Diane Alberts (Pete Skalaban) of Rutland, VT, 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren sprinkled across the nation; and her vast family of faith and friends accumulated over her 84 years. It was Joan’s wish that her family and friends not “make a big fuss” over her passing. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that your generosity be offered as a gift to her favorite charities, Volunteers in Medicine or Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church. A memorial Mass will be held at Joan’s home of faith and worship, Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church, 35 East Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House, NJ 08210, on Saturday, October 19th, 2019 at 10:00 AM with a visitation beginning at 9:00 AM.
