The Nature Center of Cape May, located on the shores of Cape May Harbor, at 1600 Delaware Ave., makes gardening at the shore easier with its annual “Native Plant Sale,” now underway.
The annual sale includes 52 species of native perennial flowers, grasses, shrubs, and trees.
Plants are selected specifically for traits including drought tolerance and their benefit to wildlife such as butterflies, songbirds, and hummingbirds, along with their ability to beautify the landscape.
Highlights include the beach plum shrub, which produces tartly delicious fruit in addition to beautifying the landscape, and the cardinal flower, with bright red flowers that attract hummingbirds and last well into fall.
A few nonnative (and noninvasive) butterfly-attracting species are offered as well, such as the showy butterfly bush, loved by Monarch butterflies.
This spring, the center is offering a special plant sale gift certificate, just in time for Mother’s Day or any special gardening enthusiast in your life.
The Nature Center’s perennials, trees, and shrubs are large and well developed. The minimum two-quart size allows the plants’ beauty to be enjoyed almost immediately. And, the more plants ordered, the cheaper the price!
Plant sale orders will be accepted through May 1. Call the Nature Center of Cape May at 609-898-8848 for a catalog and order form, or visit our Web site at njaudubon.org/centers/nccm, and click on the Annual Plant Sale link.
Plants may be picked up at the nature center between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on May 16 and 17.
