Deputy Fire Chief
Serving as a Volunteer Fire Captain and Deputy Chief was a rewarding experience both personally and professionally. I had the opportunity to serve under the command of my son Chief Richard Harron, and alongside my other son, Bryan. Together we worked on many improvements. We instituted an orientation program for new firefighters, implemented new Standard Operating Procedures for better response, and improved the fire district’s Insurance Service Office (ISO) rating which decreased the fire tax rate for our residents. Additionally, I attend hundreds of hours of administrative training on the National Incident Management System which complies with the Federal Emergency Management (FEMA) requirements.
Experiences Obtained
As a captain, it was my responsibility to lead a group of firefighters on the fire scene and in some cases into burning buildings. As the Deputy Fire Chief, I had the opportunity to manage the operational portion of the fire scene by directing the strategic attack of the fire suppression. One of the most rewarding elements of this experience was administratively working with my sons. Together we implemented new Standard Operating Guidelines as well as the Orientation Program that improved firefighter safety and reduced the ISO rating for our tax payers.
As Sheriff
These experiences readily apply to the role of Sheriff. The National Incident Management System is the nationally recognized system for responding to localized and large-scale disasters. This system is designed to assist the Incident Commander of the scene in managing the incident through its growth and declining phases. First responders in both the supervisory and administrative capacities are required to have this training. I have both the training and experience in applying this concept in both small and large scale events. I also know the importance in working together to improve standards for a safer work place.
