Meet Richard Harron – Candidate for Cape May County Sheriff

Richard Harron

By Sponsored

New Jersey County Jail Warden’s Executive Member

I was an Executive Member of the New Jersey County Jail Warden’s Association (NJCJWA) from January 2003 until I retired on July 1, 2009. I served as the association’s secretary, treasurer, vice president and president. The NJCJWA focuses on best practices and ideas for managing county jails, reviewing training standards and monitoring pending legislation that will impact County Correctional Center operations.

Experiences Obtained

As NJCJWA Executive Member, I gained a broader perspective of how other county jails operated, as well as new technologies available to the County Correction Center. I had the opportunity to be part of a team that improved professional standards of county corrections throughout New Jersey. I testified before the State Public Safety Committee to help pass a new law (2C:29-10), making it a criminal offense to use cell phones in jails and prisons. I worked with the executive board to standardize basic training for all new county correctional officers in New Jersey. The plan was approved by the Police Training Commission. Implementing new county jail inspections that met ACA Nationally standards, the committee saved our county $10,000 in accreditation fees. The Committee Executive Board was instrumental in bringing the computerized fingerprinting system (Livescan) to all 21 county jails and police agencies in New Jersey. I also spearheaded legislation to raise bond fees that reduced tax dollars to support statewide County Corrections Information Systems.

As Sheriff

These experiences readily apply to the role of Sheriff. I will use my experiences working with other county and state agencies to constantly explore improvements and cost-savings for the Sheriff’s Office and Correction Center. It’s time for an independent Sheriff that will bring fresh ideas to Cape May County. Please follow me on Facebook @Richardharronforsheriff. Thank you.
