Local Expert to Present on Historic Preservation Basics

By Press Release

AVALON – Historic Preservationist Joan Berkey, an expert in Cape May County architectural history, is scheduled to present a program entitled “Preserving Your Historic Home or Building” Sept. 23 at 6:30 p.m. at Avalon History Center, 215 39th St, Avalon, NJ. The program will cover preservation basics including information about listing homes on the National Register of Historic Places.
Attendees also will be invited to view the Avalon Cottage, a small 100 year-old building recently restored on the grounds of the Avalon History Center. Cottages such as this one were used as hunting or fishing cabins or to house extra visitors at seashore homes, and could be ordered from companies like Sears. Berkey will explain the process of researching the building as part of her presentation.
Avalon History Center is a local history museum that displays a collection of objects from Avalon’s past. Visitors can learn more about their favorite beach town by viewing fun and fascinating displays, including a 1925 Avalon Life Boat that they can climb into. The History Center’s collection includes thousands of photographs, objects, and ephemera that tell the story of Avalon’s residents, places, and events.
