CAPE MAY — The Greater Cape May Historical Society would like to announce the award for the 2016 Spring Essay Contest. This year’s topic was “History in my Neighborhood.” The award was presented to Skylar Murray at the West Cape May Elementary school by President Diane Muentz and the Society Board Members. The Board was impressed with the students who participated in the contest and their knowledge of Cape May local history. Each student was received a certificate of recognition for participating in the contest.
Since 1973, the Society is the steward of The Colonial House Museum, located in the first period Memucan Hughes house, c. 1730. The mission of the Greater Cape May Historical Society is to collect, preserve, and share the history of the greater Cape May area. The Society seeks to have an ethical, open, and friendly group of volunteers to maintain the Society’s mission and vision. Volunteers to serve on the Board all always welcome. Guides are also needed for the Colonial House from June 15 through September 15. The Society has received a grant administered by the Cape May County Culture & Heritage Commission from funds granted by the New Jersey Historical Commission.
The Society is a qualified organization of the New Jersey Cultural Trust and a member of the American Association of State and Local History StEPs Program–a Standards and Excellence Program for History Organizations.
