Bruce graduated from high school in Millville in 1968, which was a big year in the Vietnam War.
He joined the Army and was enlisted in the I Corps, not far from the demilitarized zone. He was 20-years-old at the time and it was a heck of a way to grow up. As a result of his time in Vietnam, Bruce was awarded the Soldier’s Medal and the Bronze Star with Valor for saving his platoon during a firefight.
Once Bruce got back home, he was lucky enough to meet and marry his wife, Bonnie. They have been together for 44 years. They have two children, Shaun and Devon, and three grandkids, Kayla, Kaiden, and Morgan.
Bruce entered into a career in law enforcement, retiring as a captain in the Department of Corrections several years ago.
Bruce was involved in the community by coaching youth basketball, baseball, and soccer for 13 years while his kids were in school. He is an active community member in everything from the North Italy Club and the Thunderbolt Club, to the American Legion and the Elks.
For years, most people called him coach, not assemblyman.
People who serve in the military want to continue their service. You take an oath, and that oath never ends.
At the ripe young age of 64, Bruce ran for New Jersey Assembly. It has been rewarding for Bruce to make a difference in people’s lives as an assemblyman. With Sen. Bob Andrzejczak and Assemblyman Matt Milam (both D-1st), Bruce has passed 25 bills to help veterans, including laws to provide job training and scholarships to returning veterans and increase their income tax deduction to $6,000.
They have also helped seniors stay in their homes, and retire with dignity by expanding a freeze on property taxes. They have created new funding for women’s healthcare services like preventative services, prenatal care, and life-saving cancer screenings. They have been able to put people to work by helping our local economy expand, with industries including commercial fishing, aquaculture, and wineries.
Bob, Bruce and Matt have accomplished a lot, but there’s still more work to do, especially to make South Jersey more affordable.
