Food drive needs support

By On Deck Staff

Ocean City and the Atlantic County Utilities Authority have teamed up to provide a Fall Food Drive to benefit the Ocean City Ecumenical Council’s Food Cup-board.
The Food Drive will be held from Monday, Sept. 21 through Friday, Sept. 25. Residents are asked to fill any bag with cans or boxes of nonperishable food items and place at the curb by 7 a.m. of your recycling day. The ACUA recycling crews will pick up the food and take it to the Food Cupboard.
Stickers indicating the bagged items are food donations will be available at City Hall, Henry S. Knight Building and the Ocean City Airport during normal business hours.
The Ecumenical Council’s Food Cupboard is located on the first floor of St. Peter United Methodist Church at 501 East 8th St., Ocean City and is open to all those residents in need at no cost.
Mayor Sal Perillo stated, “The Food Cupboard and its many volunteers are another example of the spirit of giving that exists in Ocean City. And although many residents generously donate during the holidays, this food drive is a reminder that the need exists year round.”
The Food Cupboard is staffed by volunteers from nine local churches that make up the Ocean City Ecumenical Council.
Most needed items are: canned fruits, meats, potatoes and vegetables, cereal, crackers, dry milk, Hormel microwave meals, jelly, juice, macaroni and cheese, pasta, peanut butter, pork and beans, ramen noodles, ravioli, rice, soup, Spaghetti O’s, spaghetti sauce, teabags and tuna. Please nothing frozen, perishable or in glass.
