Fishing group seeks new members

By On Deck Staff

Make this summer one that you will never forget by becoming a member of the Ocean City Marlin & Tuna Club (OCMTC). The club is a group that shares a common interest in boating and inshore and offshore fishing.
Established in 1959 the OCMTC was known as the Snug Harbor Marlin & Tuna Club with just 23 members. In 1976 the club name was changed to Ocean City Marlin & Tuna Club with membership increasing to 1,000 members.
In 1978 the club started the Overnight Billfish Tournament known as the Overnight Swordfish tournament. The first tournament registered an unbelievable 42 swordfish caught, 76 marlin released along with several tuna, dolphin and wahoo.
Recognized by Marlin magazine this tournament was called one of the most productive tournaments with only 42 boats entered.
The club continues to be recognized for community projects including donating funds for the creation of artificial reefs off the coast of Atlantic and Ocean City.
Funds have also been donated in member names to the Recreational Fishing Alliance and the Billfish Foundation.
In 1992 an outing for special needs children was started and still carries through the present. Members provide their boats for the enjoyment of these special needs children.
Be a part of this fine tradition of the 700 current members of the OCMTC! In addition to the Overnight Billfish Tournament and community service projects enjoy the numerous inshore, offshore and family oriented fishing tournaments, social events and more! And remember: stop wishin…go fishin.
