CAPE MAY – Career Firefighters of Cape May County presented a check for $33,600 to Survivors of Cancer on Nov. 9. Firefighters from Wildwood, North Wildwood, Ocean City and Cape May raised funds by selling Pink Tee Shirts.
Starting in September firefighters began selling shirts at local events throughout Cape May County. The departments involved are all active in raising funds for charity, but the joint effort was a first where all four departments came together. “We had no idea how large of a donation we would be able to collect when the event started and we are overwhelmed with how much support the community gave us” said George Rea, President of Cape May Firefighters Union. Firefighters not only sold the shirts, but their Chiefs allowed them to wear them on duty as well in an effort to help promote cancer awareness.
The firefighters came together at the Cape May VFW post for a beef and beer fundraiser on November 9th to raise even more funds and celebrate the success of the event. The VFW post was a packed house with not only the firefighters, but members of Survivors of Cancer as well. Survivors of Cancer is a local group based in Wildwood, NJ, they help aide and assist in the fight against the devastating disease of cancer. All monies collected are used for Cape May County cancer patients, survivors, and organizations dedicated to the same cause. The beef and beer event raised an additional $2,500 for the organization.
The members of the North Wildwood FMBA 56, Wildwood FMBA 50, Ocean City FMBA 27 and Cape May IAFF 3495 are thankful to everyone that helped make the fundraiser so successful. There are still a limited amount of tee shirts available at the fire stations for anyone that would like to help.
