Wildwood Pretzel Garners Write-In Votes in Election

By Jack Fichter

WILDWOOD — The Wildwood Pretzel, a character seen in two popular videos on the Herald’s Web site, received six write in votes for freeholder in the Nov. 3 general election.
He tied with Bob Jackson for having the largest number of write-in votes in the freeholder race.
The Wildwood Pretzel beat Mickey Mouse with four votes, Elmer Fudd, Scooby Doo, Chase Utley, Homer Simpson, Donald Duck, each with single votes and Alfred E. Newman with two votes.
The Pretzel also beat a host of human counterparts including Michele Obama, Marilyn Tolley, Gary Rudy, Malcolm Frazier, Jim Pickering, Jeff Van Drew, Ruth Fischer, Cinnamon Kelly, Seth Grossman, Will Morey, Nate Doughty, Stephen Barry, Tom Belasco and William Pikolyeky, all with single votes.
The Wildwood Pretzel ran a word-of-mouth campaign with no fundraising.
“I found a quarter on the boardwalk if that counts,” he said.
The Pretzel is chairman of the Salt of the Earth Party.
When asked what issues his campaign was based upon, he answered “Nothing.”
“I am a strong proponent of nothing,” said the Pretzel. “I believe in doing nothing about most everything.
“I believe most politicians share my view,” he continued.
He said he was thrilled to have beaten a slew of human beings in the write-in category.
“When it comes down to it, everybody who ran is a pretzel head, so the public figured they may as well vote for a real pretzel,” he said.
As to his future plans, the Wildwood Pretzel said he will appear in a Christmas video on the Herald Web site next month and is preparing for his annual appearance on Groundhog Day to look for his shadow on the Wildwood Boardwalk.
“If asked to run again, I will listen to the voice of the people and my fellow junk food advisors,” he said.
