WHITESBORO — For about 60 youngsters, Thur., June 10 marked the last Homework Club of the school year at Martin Luther King Community Center on West Main Street.
For Robert Matthews, center director and vice president of the Concerned Citizens of Whitesboro, Inc., it also meant taking a pie in the face to make good on a promise for the club’s top reader.
That distinction went to avid reader, Amani Banks, who topped the charts with 277 books read through since the start of the club’s 2009-2010 season.
Second top reader was Jonathan Smith. He got to slap a pie in the face of Daniel “Mr. Dan” Auld, who works helping the children with their homework as do many others, who volunteer their time to better the community.
A big group hug was given to another volunteer, who was all smiles at the affection shown by the children.
All participants in the club were awarded certificates at the conclusion of the program. Flowers were also presented to volunteers as a token of appreciation.
According to Bernie Blanks, president of the Concerned Citizens of Whitesboro, Inc. and Necheala Pierce-Garcia, program leader, the Homework Club is a joint effort of the Concerned Citizens of Whitesboro, Inc., Middle Township Recreation Department, which makes the facility available, and by many volunteers who assist and mentor the children after school, four days a week.
The club has grown in size as more parents and children take advantage of the extra study time that helps pupils become better versed in their schoolwork.
