AVALON — The community will celebrate the life of Thomas J. Russell, Sr., resident and dedicated volunteer Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. at Avalon Community Hall.
Mayor Martin L. Pagliughi will make a presentation, as well as Joe Pendrak and Dave Haberle of the Avalon Recreation Department.
Russel passed away on Aug. 28 of this year. He was father to four sons: T.J., Jr., 23; Shawn, 17; Drew, 15; and Jesse, 12.
He served as a security guard at Middle Township High School and was a celebrated coach of tee-ball, baseball, football, soccer, and basketball and mentor to the children of the Avalon recreation department.
Originally from Gloucester, Russell attended Gloucester Catholic High School, Valley Forge Military Academy, and George Washington University and had worked with the recreation department for 15 years.
A scholarship fund has been started in memory of Russell for his sons. Contributions can be sent to Thomas J. Russell, Sr. Memorial Fund, Sturdy Savings 2628 Dune Drive, Avalon.
