Stone Harbor Garden Club Marks 30 Years

By Leslie Truluck

STONE HARBOR –– Stone Harbor Garden Club celebrated its 30 year anniversary Nov. 10 at St. Paul’s Parish Hall reflecting on past accomplishments while looking to the future.
Since its inception in 1978, the club has planted 250,000 plants and trees, not only on borough median islands but also at the tennis courts, post office, in window boxes at the bridge tender’s office, Women’s Civic Club, American Legion Post 331, on the dunes and in the business district. Plantings are entirely paid for through fundraisings activities.
Sen. Jeff Van Drew, Mayor Suzanne Walters and Councilman Julian Miraglia attended the club’s meeting and highly praised the club’s beautification efforts. Members told stories about plants they have tended for 30, or in some cases, over 50 years. Prizes were awarded for correct answers to club history trivia questions.
Through 29 years of plant and bake sales the club has sold more than 100,000 plants. In 26 years the club has sold 10,000 house tour tickets and created 150 floral arrangements for the homes on tour.
The club has participated in 19 flower shows and has won prizes for its flower arrangements and taken over 100 trips. The club’s Garden of Remembrance, now 19-years-old, honors past club members and once won the Pennsylvania Horticulture Award.
For the past 25 years the club has planted a tree at Stone Harbor Elementary School for Arbor Day and has held 290 meetings, 30 cocktail parties and grew from 60 members to 183 members.
Members enjoy planting, decorating, hosting and participating in community events.
