By Al Campbell

CREST HAVEN — The 10th Police Unity Tour rode through Cape May County Sunday, May 10, Law Enforcement Memorial Day, and stopped at the Cape May County Public Safety Training Center to pay tribute to those who died in the line of duty.
With them, this year for the first time, were Cape May County firefighters who stood in a line by the blue-clad bicyclists, each of whom had to raise at least $1,650 for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.
The riders of Police Unity Tour Chapter 2 of Southern New Jersey, based in Sea Isle City riased $225,000 for the national memorial, according to Cape May County Sheriff Gary Schaffer, whose son rode in the event.
That was the destination of the pod of riders, escorted by a fleet of trucks and vans carrying repair equipment for the bicycles.
After lunch at the Cape May County Public Safety Training Center, the group headed to Lower Township, where they paid brief tribute to Lower Township Police Patrolman David Douglass, that department’s first officer to die in the line of duty Feb. 18, 1994.
Following that, they boarded the Cape May Lewes Ferry for the trans-bay ride south toward Washington, D.C.
Cape May County will mark Law Enforcement Memorial Day with ceremonies at the Crest Haven Road training center Monday, May 11 at 11 a.m. The public is invited to attend.
