PBA 59 Donates Money to Eagle Scout Project That Honors Fallen Officer

By Harry B. Scheeler Jr.

WOODBINE– The Cape May county chapter of the Police Benevolent Association, local 59 presented Frank Smyth, Jr, of Boy Scout Troop 56 with a $500 donation for his Eagle Scout project on Saturday, April 17.
Smyth is currently constructing a memorial along the Woodbine bike path to honor former Woodbine Police Chief Phillip J. DeSantis.
Chief DeSantis was killed in the line of duty, on August 6, 1973 while trying to arrest a local man after he robbed and killed a gas attendant in Middle Twp.
The project will include a sitting area with benches, an engraved monument, and a historical Facts Plaque. This location was chosen after research done by Smyth that revealed Heine Ave was where Chief DeSantis was killed. Smyth plans to have the project completed by early May with a dedication shortly after.
