Herald columnist Jim Vanore and Atlantic City Press reporter Trudi Gilfillian were among those honored at the Philadelphia Press Association’s (PPA) Annual Awards Banquet held at the Bala Golf Club June 26.
Both scored a first place in their respective categories in the PPA’s Media Awards Competition.
Gilfillian’s first place award was for Enterprise Reporting in the Daily Division.
Her story explained how a faulty warrant prevented four men from being convicted of a sexual assault charge in North Wildwood.
Vanore’s first place was for Column Writing Weekly Division. His column was critical of the profanity used by the Phillies’ Chase Utley during last October’s World Series celebration.
“Aside from the fact that he said what he did in front of countless young fans,” Vanore noted, “what compounded it for me was that I really did like this guy, not just as a player, but as a young man.”
The Philadelphia Press Association, founded in 1945, is an organization of editorial staffs of the newspapers, wire services, radio, and television stations of the Delaware Valley.
They are dedicated to the preservation of journalistic standards and ethics, to promote public confidence in the news media and respect for the newsgathering profession.
Besides its annual journalism awards contest, the PPA also sponsors scholarships for communications majors at area colleges and universities.
