RIO GRANDE — William E. Sturm Jr., 77, of Rio Grande, died Sept. 5, 2009 at home with his wife, Rosalie (Pfeiffer) Sturm, his son Billy, friend Chrissy, son John Henry and daughter-in-law Carol at his side.
He was a 1949 graduate of Middle Township High School and attended both the University of Maryland and Rutgers College.
Sturm was also a veteran of the Korean War. He worked for New Jersey Bell first as a lineman, and after 37 years, he retired as the Community Relations Manager.
He served as a Cape May County Freeholder from 1971-1996. He also served as freeholder director.
After leaving office, he then became the Lower Township Municipal Manager, where he served for 3 years. He then went back to the County to a job that he loved dearly, The Cape May County Park and Zoo Director, where he served for 3 years and 5 months. Bill belonged to many groups over the years including, the Middle Township Ambulance Corps., Court House Fire Dept., American Legion, Rotary Club, and the County Board of Elections.
He received many achievement awards over the years including The Chapel of Four Chaplains Legion of Honor.
STurm is survived by his wife of 44 years, Rosalie Sturm, five children, eight grandchildren, his brother John Sturm and his wife Darlene, his sister Maryann Swain, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family request a donation to be made to either The Cape May County Park and Zoo or the Special Services at Ocean Academy Food Bank, both at 4 Moore Road, Cape May Court House, NJ 08210.
Friends may visit Saturday, Sept. 12, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wm. E. Sturm Administration Building, Fereeholders’ Meeting Room, 4 Moore Road, Court House, NJ.
Services and burial are private.
“Nothing gets done until someone gets involved,” was one of his favorite sayings.
