RIO GRANDE — Each Tuesday since she moved to Wildwood Crest in 1964, Connie Montalto has shopped at Rio Grande ShopRite, always checked out at Register 7, and is well known to all the employees.
On Feb. 15, a day before Montalto’s 100th birthday, she did what she always does, but this time was a bit special.
Out of retirement came Judy LaRusso, Montalto’s favorite cashier, to check out her longtime customer and friend.
Assisting the centenarian with her order was Kathy Poehler, home health aide, who made sure Montalto brought her wedding photograph from 1935 to place next to a special 100th birthday cake, presented by ShopRite to its faithful customer.
“We’ve been having a cake for Connie each year since she was 95,” said Janice DiGaetano, assistant manager. “We told her we were waiting for her 100th birthday, so this is a special day,” she added.
Montalto was originally from South Philadelphia, completed the fifth grade, and then went to work at age 10, as did many of her peers.
She was surrounded by friends and Wildwood Crest neighbors who applauded as Montalto blew out one candle that signified 100 others, and then she sat and posed for many photographs.
