CREST HAVEN — Cape May County Sheriff Gary Schaffer announced on Thursday, Feb. 5 that members of the Cape May County Correctional Center will be participating this Saturday, Feb. 7 in the New York Giants’ Snow Bowl to be held at the Meadowlands Stadium benefiting the Special Olympics of New Jersey.
The teams, South Jersey Cell X-Tractors and the Gate Keepers, set a fund raising goal of $1,500.00 and to date both teams have raised over $5,800.00. Sheriff Schaffer stated in a release, “I am extremely proud of these officers and their efforts to support the Special Olympics. I challenge our fellow law enforcement officers, local political leaders and anyone else to match my donation to the team. Let’s show our support of these officers and the Special Olympics of New Jersey.”
All proceeds collected by the flag football teams benefit Special Olympics New Jersey athletes and help foster the Special Olympics mission:
“To provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.” The Snow Bowl was first introduced in 2007 and has raised more than $50,000 for Special Olympics New Jersey. The success of this event directly helps more than 17,000 athletes who train and compete free-of-charge, year-round in 23 Olympic–type sports.
