Child Seat Safety Week

By Joe Hart

TRENTON –– State Division of Highway Traffic Safety kicked-off National Child Passenger Safety Week Aug. 17 by stressing the importance of educating new parents about the proper use of infant car seats well before their newborn’s arrival.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2005, more than 1,450 children 14 years of age and younger died as a result of motor vehicle crashes, and approximately 203,000 were injured, with an average of 4 deaths and 556 injuries each day.
State law requires that all children under 8 years of age or who weigh less than 80 pounds, be properly restrained in the appropriate child safety seat.
In this county, the Sheriff’s Office provides an inspection of child safety seats at the Rio Grande Fire Station on Route 47 between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month.
