Cape May County youth celebrate National 4-H Week

By On Deck Staff

National 4-H Week, October 4-10 is being celebrated in Cape May County with an Open House.
On Wednesday, Oct. 7 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Lockwood 4-H Youth Center, local 4-H youth will connect with the community by welcoming potential members, showcasing current 4-H clubs and activities, playing games, serving refreshments and giving away prizes.
That evening, 4-H members and guests will join millions of young people across the nation in participating in the second annual “National Youth Science Experiment.” “Biofuel Blast” explores bio-fuels and alternative energies and will demonstrate how organic materials can be converted to fuel. Participants will share their results online with other youth from all over the nation.
The National Youth Science Experiment is just one example of how young people can grow from their involvement in 4-H.
“Being in the 4-H program has allowed me to meet new people and be involved with others who share my passions,” Cape May County 4-H member Sara O’Brien, 16, from Ocean View said.
“My experience in 4-H has positively impacted my life because of good role models and expression of leadership. The program has allowed me to enhance my strengths and improve my weaknesses. It is a great group of people who can always be counted on and who truly represent having character.”
4-H is a community of six million young people across America learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills. In Cape May County, more than 3,846 youth and 149 volunteers are impacted by 4-H through membership and partnerships in the community.
The fundamental 4-H ideal of practical, “learn by doing” experiences encourage youth to experiment, innovate and think independently. 4-H programs are offered through school-based, after-school and camp settings, partnerships with other organizations and within community clubs.

4-H member-ship is open to all boys and girls, grades K-13 without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, or disability. Learn more about the 4‑H adventure at www.RUinto4H.org.
