COURT HOUSE – Starting with horse-drawn vehicles sending boxes of books to general stores and post offices, libraries have used bookmobiles to deliver information, technology, and resources to lifelong learners across the country.
According to a release, the Cape May County Library will celebrate National Bookmobile Day April 10, recognizing the contributions of the dedicated bookmobile staff that provide library services to their communities.
The occasion is an opportunity to express support for these important mobile institutions that often extend library materials into areas that are not served by a physical library. While there are gaps in Cape May County’s bookmobile’s history, the first bookmobile debuted in September 1926.
The current bookmobile was purchased in July 2015.
The Cape May County Library is celebrating National Bookmobile Day by taking its bookmobile to five branches from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., where patrons are invited to step aboard the truck and check out materials, from children’s books, adult books, DVDs, and audio books.
The bookmobile will make the following stops:
• Upper Township Branch: 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
• Sea Isle City Branch: 12 p.m. – 1 p.m.
• Woodbine Branch: 2:15 p.m. – 3:15 p.m.
• Lower Township Branch: 4:15 p.m. – 5:15 p.m.
• Wildwood Crest Branch: 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Celebrated annually during National Library Week, National Bookmobile Day is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA), the Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services (ABOS), and the Association for Rural & Small Libraries (ARSL).
The Cape May County Library operates branches in Cape May City, Lower Township, Wildwood Crest, Cape May Court House, Stone Harbor, Upper Township, Sea Isle City, and Woodbine.
The library has books, audio books, downloadable eBooks, video games, music, magazines, movies, and a bookmobile service with stops throughout the county every Thursday and Friday.
The library offers free internet, computers, printing, scanning, mobile Wi-Fi hot spots, and more.
