WILDWOOD – On May 24, Cape May County Healthy Community Coalition, a community initiative of Cape Assist, will hold several “Sticker Shock” events in Cape May County.
“As the vacation season opens, we wanted to remind everyone that it is against the law to purchase alcohol for anyone under the legal drinking age of 21, so we chose the Thursday prior to Memorial Day to hold our ‘Sticker Shock’ events,” stated Kim Mounce, senior coalition coordinator for Cape Assist, in a release. “We also chose to do various locations throughout Cape May County.”
Youth, store staff, and coalition members will rally together to raise public awareness about the minimum drinking age law by placing stickers on multi-packs of beer and wine coolers. The sticker reads: “Think Twice! It’s not your call. It’s the law,” reminding adults that it is illegal to purchase alcohol for anyone under 21. Below are the locations they will be targeting.
1. Bellevue Tavern, Court House
2. Sunset Liquors, Cape May
3. Seaville Tavern, Upper Twp.
4. Green’s Liquor, Wildwood
Alcohol has been identified as the number one drug of choice among youth, and according to the youth, one of the easiest to get. SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) reports that adults who had their first drink before the age of 15 were seven times more likely to experience alcohol problems than those who had not started drinking before the age of 21.
“By working together, we can create a safer, healthier lifestyle for our children by taking a proactive stand against underage drinking and its related problems,” stated Mounce.
