Family Promise Aided By Young Entrepreneur

Alec Levin with Family Promise.

By Jim McCarty

NORTH CAPE MAY – Family Promise is a non-profit organization that provides daytime services and arranges for temporary shelter in churches for 19 homeless children, and two families with no roof over their heads at Christmas.
Located on Townbank Road here, the organization received a special Christmas gift from an unexpected source Dec. 23. The unexpected “Santa” turned out to be a highly-motivated local high school student.
Alec Levin, 18, a Lower Cape May Regional High School senior, is ready to take the business world by storm with a simple philosophy that became his start-up company name.
Levin created “Actions Over Words” about six months ago because he was tired of people promising great things with rhetoric, but falling woefully short on action.
This young entrepreneur, who is headed for a Drexel University finance program in Philadelphia next year, was inspired by a school program where Cape Resorts provided support, advice and structure to students thinking of starting their own company.
With the help of his parents and teachers, Levin began a clothing company with a $500 investment of his own money, and a little help from his parents.
Based on an informal network of friends and family throughout the nation, Levin began designing and distributing T-shirts, sweats, caps and other informal wear to be sold by various local retailers wherever his network took him.
Within the last week, things have been moving rapidly for the young businessman. He is planning to launch a new “Upscale clothing line soon that will still be affordable,” and expects to get a new, more affordable website in operation to expand his reach even further.
Levin especially noted the help he received from United Uniforms of Rio Grande.
This company is currently manufacturing his product and Mr. Ginsburg of that firm has been a great source of help and advice throughout the early days of his company.
Levin made a point of saying that he feels a sense of responsibility to this community and so he wanted to express gratitude by giving something back to that community. He then delivered on his new company’s name, by donating $1,700 to Family Promise, no strings attached, as part of his desire to provide actions to the betterment of his hometown.
Director Laurie Johnson was overwhelmed by the gift and promised to use the money to expand outreach throughout the community to ensure that no child or family is homeless, regardless of the time of year.
Levin’s sense of corporate responsibility is in keeping with his company name; he has proven that his actions are indeed more tangible and meaningful than mere rhetoric.
