Derby Day Event Helps Local Charity

Derby fans watch the horses round the track enjoying the day and raising money at The Branches Kentucky Derby fundraising party May 6.

ELDORA – The Third Annual Kentucky Derby Day Party took place at Pembrook Horse Farm May 5.
This party coincides with the Kentucky Derby. It was held to benefit The Branches Episcopal Community Outreach Center. The event was deemed a success.
The Branches is an outreach of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church of Stone Harbor located in Rio Grande. The goal of the organization is to serve the underserved in Cape May County.
The Branches provides services and partners with many other churches and organizations throughout the county joining forces to give back to the county. The Branches provides counseling, bus services, food, clothing, general educational development (GED) tutoring and others.
Thanks to a group of dedicated volunteers and generous donations from businesses all over the county, the event was a hit. The indoor horseback riding ring was transformed for the event which included a Chinese and live auction, hors d’oeuvres, dining, a bar and a mock horse betting station.
In attendance were residents from all over the county, including summer residents.
Sen. Jeff Van Drew, Assemblyman Robert Andrzejczak and Assemblyman Bruce Land (all D-1st), were also in attendance. They thanked The Branches for all it does for Cape May County.
Derby guests were decked out in fancy derby clothes and, of course, big floppy hats.
A large television allowed everyone to watch the races and cheer on their favorite horses. To add to the fun, $1,000 in ‘play’ money was given out with every ticket for the event, and the person with the most money at the end of the races won a special prize.
The event organizers and all guests were delighted with the success of the event, raising money to benefit those in need.
