COURT HOUSE – Members of the community joined to ‘Light the Night’ for domestic violence awareness. CARA, The Coalition Against Rape and Abuse, held three awareness events this month to coincide with Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
CARA’s first event was a candlelight vigil Oct. 19 at the Lower Township Municipal Complex. A second candlelight vigil was held Oct. 25 in Court House, followed by a Domestic Violence Education Night Oct. 26 at the Lighthouse Deliverance Ministries in Woodbine.
About 25 gathered in front of the old Cape May County Courthouse located on Route 9 for the Middle Township vigil Oct. 25. Staff and volunteers of CARA, Cape May County Freeholders Gerald Thornton, and E. Marie Hayes joined community members in lighting candles as night fell. Their goal, to remind the community that domestic violence exists and there is a haven available to those in need.
United together shows victims and survivors that their community supports them and there is hope and help available.
CARA staff quoted statistics about domestic violence and explained to the community that there is always a way out, no matter the time of day, help is available and accessible.
CARA serves Cape May County and offers 24/7 free services to those in need. Some of the services provided include legal services, residential services, counseling, men’s groups and many others. The organization also has programs available to the community to educate on domestic violence, cyber bullying and a multitude of topics.
