Joint Naval Exercise Takes Place Near Cape May

By Al Campbell

CAPE MAY — The Canadian vessel HMCS Glace Bay was photographed off Cape May’s beach Oct. 16 in the early evening as part of “Frontier Sentinel” an annual joint exercise that includes U.S. Navy, Coast Guard and Canadian military forces in mine countermeasure operations.
The vessel is a Kingston-class coastal defense vessel that has served in the Canadian Forces and Royal Canadian Navy since 1996.
The event, posted in the Federal Register Oct. 3, stated, “The Coast Guard is establishing three temporary safety zones on the waters of the Delaware Bay and North Atlantic Ocean adjacent to Cape May. The safety zones will restrict vessel traffic on a portion of the Delaware Bay and North Atlantic Ocean while a Navy exercise is taking place. These temporary safety zones are necessary to protect the surrounding public and vessels from the hazards associated [with] the exercise.”
