County, Cape May Work Toward ‘Coast Guard Community’

By Al Campbell

WILDWOOD — Cape May County and the City of Cape May are working toward winning the designation “Coast Guard Community.” One of the reasons is the economic benefit derived from the Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May. Another reason is the strong emotional ties many in the county have to the base and recruits, some of whom are guests in their homes at Thanksgiving and Christmas under Operation Fireside.
Members of Cape May County Chamber of Commerce learned June 20 at the June membership meeting that the designation, which fewer than 15 cities and counties nationwide have attained, may become reality in January 2014.
Speakers at the luncheon included Freeholder Will Morey, who is the county’s economic development liaison, Mayor Edward Mahaney of Cape May and Capt. Todd Prestidge, who recently assumed command of Training Center Cape May, where the service’s enlisted members undergo eight and a half weeks of training before joining fleet operations.
